The Dr Mark Caplen Young Writers competition

The Dr Mark Caplen Young Writers Competition is a new event run by the Wantage Literary Festival, and it asks young people to write a review of a favourite book, film, TV show, play or podcast. There are different age categories and some great cash prizes!

Dr Mark Caplen Young Writers Competition

Wantage Literary Festival would like to invite all young writers in South Oxfordshire to take part in their brand new competition!

They would like to read young people’s personal review of their favourite book, play, TV show, film or podcast as part of the Wantage Literary Festival. Their review should cover what they like and find interesting about their chosen subject, what could be improved and why they think others would enjoy it too. Students from all schools, colleges and other organisations are welcome to enter. In the judging process, the emphasis won’t be on spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Entries are free, and they can be submitted anytime from now until Saturday 21st September 2024  so don’t miss out! (They have extended the submission deadline as they have not yet received many entries - I think anyone who takes part is therefore in with a very good chance!)
Entry categories:

  • 13-14 years - up to 500 words
  • 15-16 years - up to 600 words
  • 17-18 years - up to 750 words

Prizes: For each category:

  • 1st place - £125.00 cash
  • 2nd place - £50.00 book token
  • 3rd place - £25.00 book token kindly donated by Wantage Bookshop

An overall winner will be selected from the three first place winners to receive the Dr Mark Caplen Cup for Young Writers.

The prizes will be awarded on Thursday 26th September 2024, at an event hosted by the Wantage Bookshop, Mill Street, Wantage for all to celebrate our local young writers!
