Dance

Our aim: Ignite a passion in every young person by creating memories, both inside and outside the classroom, to give them the knowledge and confidence they need to make a lifelong commitment to their physical, mental and social well-being.

Curriculum Overview

Students have many opportunities to be involved with Dance at King Alfred’s Academy. Whether it is through Core PE lessons, choosing to study it at Level 2 or Level 3 or perform at our annual shows.

We offer a variety of electives; KS3 Dance, Year 9 Dance, KS4/5 Dance & KA’s Dance Performance Team, giving students the opportunity to perform at theatres, shows and competitions.

In Years 10 to 11, students get the opportunity to choose Level 2 BTEC in Performing Arts (Dance) as one of their option subjects – see below for more information.

Year 7, 8 and 9 Topics

Dance is taught through Core PE in Years 7, 8 & 9. Students are taught about the Components of Dance and how to choreograph using a stimulus. This is linked to the Core PE ‘MEs’, supporting Physical and Creative ME.

Students also get the opportunity to attend KS3 Dance and Year 9 Dance Electives. Through these, they will develop their enjoyment for Dance and have the chance to perform in our Winter & Spring Dance Shows.

In Year 9, students can audition to be part of KA’s Dance Performance Team; a group that competes and performs at a variety of places, one being at the New Theatre in Oxford!
