Core PE

Our aim: Ignite a passion in every young person by creating memories, both inside and outside the classroom, to give them the knowledge and confidence they need to make a lifelong commitment to their physical, mental and social well-being.

Curriculum Overview

Core PE will be a safe and secure physical environment that develops the whole person through five key “MEs”. These are:

  • Healthy ME
  • Physical ME
  • Thinking ME
  • Creative ME
  • Leading ME

In Years 9 to 11 all students continue the Core PE curriculum – they also have the option of studying the Sport and Exercise Studies option in Year 9, and GCSE PE or BTEC Sport in Years 10 and 11 - see the PE (option) and Sport (option) pages for details of these courses.

Year 7 Topics

Year 7 students focus on the Healthy ME and Physical ME criteria throughout the year. This will establish the core fundamentals of what it takes to be good at PE and School Sport.

They will complete six lessons in the following twelve sports. Terms below are a rough guide as sports may change due to the length of each term. 

Terms 1 and 2 – Cardio Tennis, Health and Football

Terms 2 and 3 – Rugby (Tag), Badminton and Parkour/Dance

Term 3 and 4 – Table Tennis, Basketball/Netball and Alternative Games

Term 5 and 6 – Athletics, Rounders and Cricket

Year 8 Topics

Year 8 students focus on the Physical ME and Healthy ME criteria throughout the year. We aim to embed the core fundamentals of what it takes to be good at PE and School Sport.

They will complete six lessons in the following twelve sports. Terms below are a rough guide as sports may change due to the length of each term. 

Terms 1 and 2 – Cardio Tennis, Health and Football

Terms 2 and 3 – Rugby (Contact), Badminton and Parkour/Dance

Term 3 and 4 – Table Tennis, Basketball/Netball and Alternative Games

Term 5 and 6 – Athletics, Rounders and Cricket

Year 9 Topics

Year 9 students  focus on the Thinking ME and Physical ME criteria throughout the year.  They progress onto explaining and comparing the strengths and weaknesses of performers and the impact these can have on performance. We continue to reinforce the core fundamentals of what it takes to be good at PE and School Sport.

They will complete six lessons in the following twelve sports. Terms below are a rough guide as sports may change due to the length of each term. 

Terms 1 and 2 – Tennis, Volley and Football

Terms 2 and 3 – Rugby (Tag), Badminton and Health

Term 3 and 4 – Basketball, Netball and Alternative Games

Term 5 and 6 – Athletics, Striking and Fielding and Cricket

Year 10 topics

Year 10 students will focus on the Creative ME and Physical ME criteria throughout the year. They progress onto understanding and applying tactics within performance and how this impacts performance. We also continue to reinforce the core fundamentals of what it takes to be good at PE and School Sport.

They will complete six lessons in the following twelve sports. Terms below are a rough guide as sports may change due to the length of each term. 

Terms 1 and 2 – Tennis, Volley and Football

Terms 2 and 3 – Rugby (Tag), Badminton and Health

Term 3 and 4 – Basketball, Netball and Alternative Games

Term 5 and 6 – Athletics, Striking and Fielding and Cricket

Year 11 topics

Year 11 students focus on the Leading ME and Healthy ME criteria throughout the year. Students focus on taking an active role in developing their leadership skills while establishing the importance being fit for life.

PE groups will be allocated a space and within this space an activity will be selected from the lists above for students to plan and deliver an appropriate activity to their peers.
